The first book you can remember reading, or having read to you as a child?

A book about a black-and-white cat with drawings — and he could speak.

The book that had the biggest impact on you as a child and changed the way you saw the world?

An eight-volume collection called The Golden Pathway which showed me the world of mankind and nature. I still have it. Yes, the world is round!

The book you secretly loved reading — and why?

As my voice broke I discovered the stories of Angélique. Six volumes written by Sergeanne Golon and set in the Court of Louis XIV. Much sexy food for thought for a little teenager.

The book you wish you’d written and why?

Anything by Joan Collins’ sister, Jackie.I’d write it in Afrikaans. Vat hom, Fluffy!

The book you never get tired of re-reading . . .

The Noël Coward Diaries — a theatrical Bible with humour and hope.

The book you’ve tried to read several times but failed to finish?

Das Kapital by Karl Marx, and that biography of Thabo Mbeki.

The book you’re currently reading?

The Myth of American Idealism by Noam Chomsky — our mad, sick world in a nutshell.

Zapiro [South African cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro].
