Evita serves up a mouthful

IOL News, 20 January  2004

Political parties have been invited to tea and koeksisters with Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout on Thursday as she launches her onslaught against voter apathy.

Evita's "fun raiser" comes ahead of the Independent Electoral Commission's final registration drive this weekend.

Her alter ego, satirist Pieter Dirk-Uys, said party representatives had been invited to make two-minute presentations at the hour-long event in Cape Town.

"The images of smiling and committed South African leaders, celebrating democracy and the vote, might encourage some of the seven million who have not registered, to register. And for all to vote."

Dirk-Uys said there was an 89,3 percent turnout in the 1999 general elections.

"In 2004 we want over 90 percent. Anything less will be bad for the democracy," he added.
