Letter to the Editor

11 April 2000

Remembering how the Apartheid structures furnished satire with blatant racism and sexism, it is rejuvenating to see our present democracy present the same! In order for independent producers to work for television in South Africa today, they have to answer the following questions for the purposes of compliance with Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) licence conditions.

1. Name of Production Company and registration number.

2. Name the shareholders of the Company. If the shareholder is a Company, indicate whether the shareholder is a black empowerment Company & provide a brief profile of the Company. If the shareholder is an individual, please indicate his/her race and gender.

3. Name the Directors of the Company and indicate the race and gender of each Director.

4. Name the Management of the Company. Indicate the race and gender of each Manager.

5. Name the personnel who will be working on the programme which has been proposed to e-tv/SABC/MNET. Indicate the race and gender of each person.

6. If your Company has provided any training over the past year, or intends to provide such training during the forthcoming year, please provide details of these training activities and the beneficiaries thereof."

Thank you, IBA! In a non-racial, non-sexist democracy like ours, a satirist couldn't make it up if he tried!
