REVIEW OF DESPERATE FIRST LADIES in GRAHAMSTOWN — MARCH 2011
Pieter Dirk Uys is adorned and adored!
– Mike Loewe, Makana Moon, 30 March 2011
Seriously Funny: Pieter Dirk Uys entertains in political satire with his irreverent wit through brilliant characterisations.
Self-declared moffie drag queen, South Africa’s favourite political satirist, had a full house at the Rhodes Theatre last night eating out of his articulate hands with his brilliant transformations into a number of women characters.
Some are well known, like the Jewish liberal Nowell Fine, who has adopted an Aids orphan baby. Then there is Winnie Mandela, with her tyre bangles and stompie and matches earrings, and, of course, Evita, and some screamingly irreverent impersonations of new faces, like that of Grace Mugabe, extending her Gucci encrusted landgrab to the Stellenbosch wine estates.
Uys’ irreverence knows no bounds, even entering the territory of heaven via Mother Theresa on a blackberry with second-class angel status. Uys takes on all of the sacred cows, while very seriously challenging our democracy, and all politicians within it to uphold it.
Bambi Kellerman also arrived to teach students how to have safe sex, also with no holds barred.
For nearly two hours Uys focused his attention on communicating intimately and warmly with all of us the things he holds most dear to his heart … and other parts of his anatomy!
