Evita 'not impressed'

– Carel van Dyk, Die Burger, 20 June 2003

Cape Town — Evita Bezuidenhout, former ambassador to Bapetikosweti, doesn't want to know anything about the honorary doctorate bestowed on Pieter-Dirk Uys, well-known actor and satirist, by the University of Cape Town on Friday evening.

Uys received an honorary doctorate at UCT's June ceremony along with Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane of the Anglican Church and Hamilton Naki, a former UCT laboratory technician of the medical faculty.

Uys said "tannie Evita" wasn't impressed with his honorary doctorate. "She bought her degree at the University of Potchefstroom for R250 in 1983 and considers my degree third-rate."

Uys, however, was most impressed with it. "I can't spell and still have a problem with Chaucer, but I am honoured to be in the company of the Archbishop and Naki".

He was honoured for his "humour therapy" during the past 30 years and for his HIV/Aids awareness campaign.

Uys was a student at UCT and studied for a drama degree between 1966 and 1968. "Those were wonderful years. I didn't learn a thing and had a ball all the time."
