Evita to star in cartoon strip

IOL News, 25 October 1999

South Africa's national treasure Evita Bezuidenhout will be written into the cartoon strip Madam & Eve from Monday until the end of the week.

Madam & Eve creators, Stephen Francis and Harry Dugmore, said she would be immortalised in print to coincide with the opening of Pieter-Dirk Uys' new show "Dekaffirnated" at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.

"We had used the concept of dekaffirnated once before in a cartoon, and it worked very well," Stephen said.

Both Uys and Bezuidenhout will appear in the strip.

Uys is thrilled at the compliment.

"It's a rare privilege to be included in Madam & Eve without having a prison record or scandal hovering over one's head", he said.

Uys said he had always admired them as being insightful political commentators.

"In fact, Evita Bezuidenhout and Madam & Eve have a lot in common, they are both the mouthpiece of men who have a lot to say, but need someone else to say it," Uys said.
